Are you a time-poor triathlete juggling family, work and training?
Meet Brian Joseph – a full-time professional, dad of three and Triathlon Nutrition Academy (TNA) graduate who recently shaved 45 minutes off his 70.3 PB. All while navigating a year of sleep deprivation, sick kids and a wife travelling for work.
In this post, you'll learn how he:
If you're doing your best with limited time and energy, Brian's story proves what’s possible with the right fuelling strategy.
Before joining the TNA program, Brian's nutrition was all over the shop. He tried everything – raw veganism, internet hacks, winging it.
But with training loads increasing and energy tanking, he knew something had to give.
"I wasn’t showing up for my kids. I'd crash after long rides, skip recovery, and my race results were slipping," Brian says.
Key lesson? Winging it only gets you so far. Real gains come when you get intentional with your nutrition.
Like many triathletes, Brian thought he had recovery covered. But inside the TNA program, he quickly realised he was under-fuelling, especially on protein.
"Once I fixed that, everything changed. I had more energy between sessions, better mood, and could actually play with the kids instead of passing out on the couch."
Now, recovery isn't an afterthought. It's part of his plan.
With a young family and crazy schedule, Brian knew he had to plan ahead. Enter: TNA's AI meal planner.
"I punch in my workouts and it spits out a weekly meal plan. We write it up on a chalkboard and stick to it. Even when the kids want mac and cheese!"
Top tips for busy triathletes:
Brian's breakthrough came at Penn State 70.3. Same body. Same training. But this time, his nutrition was dialled.
"I properly carb loaded for the first time and couldn’t believe the difference. I felt strong, steady, and just kept going."
The result? A 45-minute PB on the same course.
Proof that nailing your race day fuelling plan is a game changer.
Despite all the gains, not everything went to plan. During Ironman Chattanooga, heat and hydration got the better of him. At the same time, his son was in the ER needing stitches.
He made the tough call to defer Ironman Cozumel.
But recovery this time was different.
"I didn’t binge on junk. I prioritised sleep, hydration and proper recovery nutrition. Within days, I felt great."
Brian doesn’t have extra hours in the day. What he does have is a system that supports performance, even when life is messy.
"I still don’t have it all together, but my nutrition is. That gives me energy, routine and control."
