Triathlon Diets NOT to do this New Year and What You Should Be Doing Instead

Jan 06, 2023

Let me set the scene. You’ve over-indulged over Christmas and New Year and, just at what seems like the perfect time, you see an ad for the latest detox program, a strict calorie diet, meal replacement shakes, or your local gym sends out a 6-week New Year’s challenge!  STOP!!! Put those blinkers on and focus on what is really important.

The New Year period often brings about lots of goal setting for the year i.e. all the ways you’re going to improve your life and become the new and improved you! Diets, exercise, healthy eating, working on projects you’ve been putting off, study, work! We’ve all been there. We’ve all made that list and found out not very long afterwards that it has fallen away the roadside and it doesn’t come to fruition as we'd hoped. That ‘quick fix’ fail (the rebound) then makes you feel worse about yourself!

I want to help you create sustainable change - without having to do anything drastic – making small changes, daily. Time and consistency are what are needed to improve our health or to maintain our health. And it doesn’t involve cutting carbs or going on a diet or into a calorie deficit.

  •  What is just one thing can you do better this year?
  •  Look to include 2 fruit and 5 vegetable servings in your diet every day
  •  Keep your gut microbes happy by including many colours (and therefore vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fibre) in your diet
  •  Set SMART goals – specific, measurable, actionable, realistic and timely. Write them down.
  •  Start small – feel and celebrate the successes
  •  Achieve small little things on a daily basis – incremental steps
  •  Don’t stress about the scales – your health is not linked to your weight, your body composition or a number on the scales

Promise me you will not go on and detox!? You're not going to replace all of your meals with shakes because you ate so much over Christmas. You're not going to cut carbohydrate out because you think that's the answer to your problems. Let me tell you it's not! It's going to create more problems.

You're at a huge risk of under fuelling this month, for all of January, as you try and shift the balance back into ‘healthy’ after a potentially debaucherous Christmas/New Year. So be very mindful of that.

You can't undo that damage by under fuelling through this month. You're going to end up exhausted, potentially sick, and potentially injured. And it's unsustainable. It's not actually fixing what the issue is. So promise me, you're not going to do any of those things.

I want to challenge you to think a little bit differently. Head down, bum up. Focus on YOU and what you need to achieve. Don't do anything weird!
