If you’re an age-group triathlete smashing big training blocks, chasing PBs and wondering why your results don’t match the effort, this one’s for you.
In this post, we dive into how Troy Bauerle went from regular injuries and average race results to podium finishes and Ironman confidence, all by sorting out his nutrition.
Through the Triathlon Nutrition Academy, Troy unlocked a whole new level of performance, recovery and mindset. Here's what he changed.
Like many triathletes, Troy used to struggle with training interruptions due to recurring injuries, especially as a high-volume athlete with a physically demanding job.
But after implementing a year of consistent, well-fuelled training through the Academy his highlights include:
No injuries in 12 months. Previously unheard of for Troy!
Completed 3-week blocks of 20+ hours of training feeling energised, instead of exhausted
Could back up hard weeks without feeling broken
“Normally I’d be wrecked at the end of a big block. Now I feel like I could go again.” – Troy
This consistency helped him build race fitness like never before.
Troy’s biggest race day upgrades came from:
Proper carb loading (not the pre-race pasta he thought was right)
Training his gut to tolerate up to 115g of carbs/hour 🤯
Fuelling races with the same gels he trains with: homemade, dialled-in and tested as he's confident they are the right blend for him
He no longer fades in the final kilometres. Instead, he negative splits the run, attacks with confidence and finishes strong.
“Every race is a PB now. It’s just getting faster and faster.” – Troy
As a plumber by trade, Troy’s days are physically exhausting. Before the Triathlon Nutrition Academy, he could barely stay awake after work, let alone out in hard hours of training. Now:
He recovers like a well oiled machine
He knows exactly what to eat and when
He has quick ‘plan B’ meals if life throws him curveballs
The difference? Boundless energy is the new normal for Troy.
Troy thought nutrition might give him a small edge, maybe a 1% gain. Instead, he saw much larger benefits:
9 minute PB at Geelong 70.3 (same course, same bike)
Multiple podium finishes in a row
Confidence to train for a full Ironman and even consider Ultraman in the future
Most triathletes think they know how to carbohydrate load or recover. But as Troy discovered, it’s not about Googling a plan, it’s about understanding your needs, and building a strategy that works for you with the help of a triathlon specific sports dietitian.
If you’re putting in the hours and still not seeing the results, nutrition might be the missing piece in your puzzle.
